From 1985 to 2003, Prior Pursglove College was home to PPC Swingband.
A small group was formed in 1985 to perform at a summer concert. This developed and grew into a full size big band within two years, comprising saxophones, trumpets, trombones and rhythm sections. There was always a female vocalist, too.
Members met twice a week for rehearsals. Most were not music students, indeed A' Level music was not available at that time. Despite this, the standard of performance rose quickly and the band went on its first foreign tour in 1988 to Saltzburg.
In the summer of 1990 the band went on tour to Bruges, and this proved so successful that over the next few years a further six visits were organised.
The band usually performed six to eight gigs a year, even winning the dance band class in the Whitby Music Festival in 1990. A recording was made at Studio 64 in Middlesbrough in February 1990.
Several staff played in the band over the years, too, and it finally folded on the retirement of its director, Vaughan Dexter, in 2003.
